A story about trust, responsibility, and why we decided to build a more direct relationship with our customers.
Before BSCOBBER became a direct-to-consumer outdoor brand, our team spent years developing and manufacturing products for other brands.
We once worked with an external agency to launch one of our products on Kickstarter.
The campaign was successfully funded, and as the manufacturer, we had already produced the products.
But after the campaign, the agency stopped communicating with us following changes within their team. We lost access to the Kickstarter account and the backer information needed to fulfill the orders.
At the time, we were still learning how Kickstarter crowdfunding worked and had relied on the agency to manage the campaign and communicate with backers.
That experience changed the way we think about responsibility, communication, and building a consumer brand.
We Had the Products. We Still Chose to Ship.
We had already manufactured the products, but the funds collected through the campaign were no longer available to us.
We could have considered the situation outside our responsibility.
But behind every pledge was a real person who had trusted the product.
So we decided to fulfill the rewards ourselves and absorb the loss.
We shipped the orders because we did not want people who had supported the product to be left without it.
A Small thank-you and apology letters to Our Backers
We also prepared thank-you and apology notes to include with the shipments.
It was a small gesture, but we wanted every backer to know that there were real people behind the product who genuinely appreciated their trust.
For us, crowdfunding is not simply about collecting pledges.
It is about people choosing to support a product before they have it in their hands.
That trust comes with responsibility.
What We Still Want to Make Right
The original Kickstarter campaign is still online today.
Many backers have confirmed in the comments that they eventually received their rewards. However, we have also seen comments from a small number of backers who said they never received theirs.

Because we did not have access to the original Kickstarter account or a complete backer list, we were never able to independently verify every order.
Seeing those comments today is difficult for us, because we know some people may still be waiting.

Why We Chose to Build BSCOBBER Differently
This experience changed the way we wanted to build BSCOBBER.
We realized that if we truly wanted to make products for people, we also wanted to hear directly from those people.
Our team combines product development, engineering, testing, and manufacturing experience. With BSCOBBER, we wanted to bring that experience directly into a consumer brand.
We want to design our products, manufacture them, listen to our customers, and stand behind what we make.
No unnecessary middle layer.
No passing responsibility from one company to another.
That's one of the reasons BSCOBBER exists today.
And that's why, this time, we're here on Kickstarter ourselves.
Building a Direct Relationship With Our Community
This is also why OmniPump-1 is an important step for BSCOBBER.
OmniPump-1 is a compact multi-use inflator designed for cycling, outdoor adventures, and everyday inflation needs.
Instead of simply developing and manufacturing a product behind the scenes, we're now able to communicate directly with the people who support and use our products.
Their questions help us test assumptions.
Their feedback helps us identify things we may have overlooked.
And their experience helps us understand what matters in real-world outdoor use.
We want to know the people who support our products — and we want them to know the people who build them.
What's Different This Time?

Designing the product ourselves.
